Study the two best play callers in the NFL from 2025. Sean McVay and Ben Johnson. Over 900 pages total.
This 514 page Bears Manual provides the most comprehensive breakdown of Ben Johnson's offense (or any NFL offense) that you can get your hands on. The book is sectioned out by individual concept and provides detail one step further than a playbook. The best coaches of all levels have been stealing from Ben Johnson the last few seasons. His offense translates to all levels of the game (high school, college). He features a balanced attack that is constantly hunting explosive play opportunities.
The success of the offense starts with the development of Caleb Williams. When Johnson was hired in January of 2025, Williams was a raw talent starving for quality coaching. Ben Johnson challenged Williams, and didn’t simply build a few plays “around his skillset” like we see for so many young quarterbacks. This aided Williams’ development as the season went along, and allowed the Bears to attack any coverage structure they faced. Williams grew in both the drop back and play action categories of pass concepts.
The run game was the center piece of the offense during the middle of the season when the Bears started to show sustained success. The Bears ended the season 4th in the NFL in EPA/rush (Sumer Sports). Their run game centered around endless Outside Zone variations that allowed the offensive line to create quality angles. The run game is multiple, similar to Johnson’s philosophy in Detroit.
Ben Johnson is the best situational play caller in the NFL. His short yardage and red zone menus give the Bears an edge every Sunday. His willingness to design creative runs on 3rd downs takes pressure off the quarterback and offensive line when defenses are pinning their ears back.
The Rams are widely considered the best offense in the NFL from the 2025 season, as they led the league in scoring. Sean McVay has a track record of leading top offenses, evolving his system every season to stay ahead of defenses. The 2025 season stands tall among his accomplishments. The signature evolution of the offense featured a deep commitment to 13 personnel. This book explains how this tied into every concept they built around it.
Sean McVay is a savant at creating conflict in zone defenders to create large voids in the back end of the secondary. The 7-step play action concepts marry with the Rams run game to the point of asking wide receivers to run Cross and Sail routes after inserting into the core of the formation. The assortment of concepts that feature a Dig route will delight.
The Rams run Keeper concepts better than anybody in the NFL. I spend six sections discussing the specifics of how they create easy completions for Stafford
Sean McVay’s 5-step package features a handful of concepts built around a two man stack. This book focuses on how they work and how they tie together to create confusion for defenses.
The Rams built their run game around Duo. This book contains 12 sections on Duo, covering all of the different ways the Rams run it and the “why” behind it. My favorite run game section features their usage of “Iso”. The perfect compliment to Duo that utilizes a set of rules to adjust for any defensive front or coverage rotation. Iso averaged over 5 yards per carry for the Rams.
The Rams expanded their Outside Zone menu in 2025. In past years, we recognized them with Outside Zone Weak concepts. In 2025, they shifted to different Outside Zone Strong variations. These compliment Duo better, and generated quite a few explosive runs throughout the season.
