The Matt LaFleur Bundle
Enjoy both book formats, breaking down the Packers offense.
2023: The Green Bay Packers showcased in 2023 why Matt LaFleur should be included in all discussions around the top offensive minds in the game. The success of the offense, centered around the development of Jordan Love, is where the conversation should start. In this book, I break down the entire Packers offense, by cocnept.
I wrote a 2020 Manual on Green Bay, and had to think hard about doing another one for 2023. After watching some of the tape, the decision was easy. The design of the offense is remarkable, and coaches of all levels will learn a lot from studying how they operate.
In my 2020 Manual, I called the Packers run game a “Meat and Potatoes” attack. In 2023, the meat was tender and the potatoes were hot. The Packers build exceptional plays out of their three core concepts, Outside Zone, Inside Zone, and Duo. RPO’s, formations, motions, sequencing, and play action concepts all marry together to make them tough to prepare for. The Packers also had success with some gap and man runs in 2023 to diversify a bit and take advantage of defenses overplaying their core concepts.
The Packers built a strong play action pass game to help Love push the ball down the field. LaFleur and his staff use some of the staple Shanahan/McVay classics, but he puts his own flavor on them to enhance Green Bay’s attack.
The Packers drop back game is filled with examples of Love hitting every read in the progression, for both pure progressions and coverage reads. This is a testament to the design of the concepts as well as the coaching staff’s ability to teach it.
Matt LaFleur’s red zone game plans have been the best in the NFL in his tenure as the head coach in Green Bay. Which base plays does he choose to feature down there? How does he adapt his RPO game to account for the constricted space and different coverages?
2024: The Green Bay Packers are quickly becoming one the teams that you need to study every off season. They run a comprehensive offense that adapts each week to their opponent’s defense. The Game Planning format of this book is perfect for them.
They are balanced, run the ball well and pass efficiently. They have the ability to create explosives each week with their understanding of how their opponents’ coverages work. When Jordan Love was out, the offense didn’t miss a beat. Matt LaFleur and his staff adapted their game plans.
The Packers evolved their run game to feature some creative presentations for their core concepts. The different motions used for split zone runs as well as Counter stuck out to me as great ways to create leverage for better blocking angles.
This book features a lot of creative screen concepts the Packers featured in 2024. The mark of a well-coached offense is screen efficiency, and Green Bay certainly checks this box.
They find creative ways to get their explosive receivers touches. I made it a focus of this book to study as many of these as necessary.
